Life's Little Instruction Book:

Have a firm handshake.

SECRETS TO GOOD ANCHORING: LESSON 1 - BE DIFFERENT AND DO IT DIFFERENTLY

Hey friends! It's been a long time since I posted. For long, my posts have been rather lost and directionless. I tried my best to centre around trivia and knowledge. But, I think there's already an overdose of information out in the world. Either I have been completely oblivious to this or the ignorant avatar in me had enslaved my otherwise alert conscience. I, therefore decided to, if not for eternity, at least for a few days throw some light on the secrets of good 'ANCHORING'. There are, in fact, a lot of good anchors out there. But there's a very fine line of difference between being a good anchor and and an enterprising one. You need to dare to be the black sheep in a herd of white; you must dare to spike in the flat world; you must dare to roar like a lion when there are pigs all around. I'm constantly reminded and motivated by one of Rajnikanth's punch lines - "Pannigal dhaan kootamaa varum. Singam singleaadhaan varum!! " (Only pigs come in a herd. A lion comes alone). As Shiv Khera says , it's not about doing different things but doing things differently. Appealing to the crowd as an anchor isn't about doing different things on stage but simply doing the conventional stuff a bit differently.

A lot of people believe that good anchors are enterprising too, a notion I strongly oppose. As a professional anchor, it's very difficult to be enterprising. The stakeholders are constantly worried about failing (Cynical, I call them), and they are the ones I find toughest to handle. Handling the crowd, understanding their psychology is a different mission altogether. The journey, in truth starts in the organizer's mind. Most don't want to run the risk of an ugly goof up or a faux paus on stage. Hence, anything eccentric and out of the box is usually frowned upon. I get a lot of it. Even after almost 20 successful stage performances, people always ask for a day's time to think when I put forward my ideas to them.(Note:- I always refer to my anchoring as a performance)

You need to understand that anchoring is not merely a complimentary act in a show. It's a performance on its own. A stand alone performance, not assisted by any soul. It is what keeps the show running. It is what removes (supposed to, at least) the monotony in a show. It is like the fuel that runs the show despite hiccups in other performances. When I walk up on stage, I know I'm the most important person on stage and the success of the show is entirely dependent on the degree of my success as an anchor.

Coming back to my point, good anchors are not enterprising. Not enterprising enough at least. Goodness is very subjective. And most organizers believe that good anchors are the ones who stick to the conventions and super religiously at that!! It takes me a whole lot of effort to convince my clients that eccentricity, in fact, covers up everything, from the inadvertent goof ups to all the slip ups. I would even go ahead to say that an eccentric and an out-of-the-box style gives you the liberty to make errors intentionally and still get away with them. A very popular Indian comedian describes his slip-of-the-tongues as "MANY A SLIP BETWEEN THE TONGUE AND THE LIP!!" And the fellow normally gets away with all his controversial statements simply because of his crazy style of presenting them.

As an anchor you need to understand that people are seeing anchors everyday in every field. In the life of an average global citizen, he comes across at least 5 anchors everyday. Right from the News anchor in the morning to a lecturer at college or school, at work , commentators in a prime time game,etc. As someone who wants to stand out of the crowd, your pursuit should not be to simply be a good anchor but a different one - A Trend Setter!! Give them a taste of your world and the whole world will flock to it. Someone very rightly said, "DARE TO LOSE SIGHT OF THE SHORE....ONLY THEN WILL YOU BE ABLE TO EXPLORE NEW AVENUES"!!!

Some very good examples to back my argument would be Hugh Jackman who anchored the Academy Awards in 2009. He is a perfect case in example of an enterprising anchor who captivated the world audience by sheer craziness!! Harsh Boghle, who happens to be my role model for the subtle ways in which he presents his crazy inner self. Mr.Bhogle is someone who inspires me simply because there's so much sense and method to his craziness!! You may argue that he's one of those conventional anchors. But, he's everything but conventional!! Why I say so, you'll know coz' I'll keep referring to him every now and then and justify my patronage to him. Another paradigm example of an anchor who dared to be different was Dr. Prannoy Roy, the Chief of NDTV. He started way back in the 1980s with a then popular show - The World This Week. His simple and natural style of anchoring was then a very refreshing one to Indians who until then had only been listening to mechanical and robotic newsreaders on Doordarshan. These days, you'll hardly find any of those robots reading the news. Dr. Roy revolutionised the style of news anchoring and brought in an air of freshness and energy to the bland news reading industry. No one would dare call Dr. Roy crazy. But crazy doesn't just mean jumping like a monkey on stage!! If you retrospect and rewind to the then India, you would agree with me that Dr. Roy was indeed crazy to try a different style like that!!! These are the people I call trend-setters.

There is a constant need to not just be good at what you're doing because the world is filled with people doing things the way they should be done. What truly sets you apart is doing it, if not in a better way, at least differently. My mantra to being different is "ECCENTRICITY". The World out there is crazy!! So I just present my self a bit more crazier!! Let the convention be unconventional! What is your Mantra to being different? Ponder over it while I come up with my next secret to becoming a successful anchor.

How I lost my French Beard because of a 7 yr old Kid

I couldn't help but blog this out. I look back at that moment and can only laugh. But that moment, the moment when a 7 yr old kid taught me one of life's most important lessons, has to be the most embarrassing moments of my life.

All through my college life, I went to college as a complete professional with a clean shaven face and a decent shirt nicely tucked in. The moment I completed graduation, I decided it was time for a change. After all, change is the only thing constant in life. I couldn't change my style of dressing coz' I had already settled into it and was comfortable in nothing else other than a shirt. So, I decided to do something with my face. I started growing my hair. Stopped shaving my beard and on a one 'not so fine' day, I realized that my beard had enough thickness to be shaped into a French beard!! And so I followed my instincts and went ahead with the cut. It looked good, I thought. More so, because it was different and yet conventional without being too eccentric. It seemed like almost the best thing I could have done to start the whole 'CHANGE' process, until I stepped out of my house.

I stepped out only to see my neighbor's family come out too. They looked a bit surprised on seeing my new look. I was glad that people noticed the change. I must admit I was in desperate need for some compliments and positive comments on my new look. The lady said "You are looking different, Jerry ". That comment was only a part of what I wanted. She didn't say I looked good. She only said I looked different. It might take people some more time to get used to me like this, I thought.

I consoled my self and just as I was about to move on, the neighbor's 7 yr old kid stepped ahead and asked "Uncle (damn!!), why do you have beard only around your mouth?" I just turned around and walked away. Actually, I walked straight into my house and shaved off the beard then & there.

I have been trying to find an answer to the child's question ever since but all search has been vanity. What I did realise however, is that there's no point changing just for the sake of it. You need to have a good reason. A reason so good that the change must bring in an air of positivity, goodness, humility and change your life or some one else's in some way or the other.

A rose is a rose because it looks like one and smells like one. I can be ME only if I look like ME and stay true to my identity.

That little kid taught me a great lesson in life and I still adhere to it.

Children can wreck havoc with your mind, can't they!!??

Best Cricket Sledges

Wiki refers to sledging as 'exchanging words with opposition player(s) which can put him(them) off their usual game; it is an attempt to "psych out" an opponent'. Cricket is a very interesting game, and sledging adds to it the extra spice that make it much more than just game.
Here is a compilation of the best sledging related incidents, witnessed in the history of cricket...

History
Sledging has always been a part of cricket.Even the great WG Grace did it. Once in an exhitbition match given

out leg-before, he refused to walk and told the umpire: " They came to watch me bat, not you bowl ". And the innings continued.

Grace's ability to stand his ground would have done Sunil Gavaskar proud. Once, when the ball knocked off a bail, he replaced it and told the umpire: " Twas the wind which took thy bail orf, good sir ."
The umpire replied: "Indeed, doctor, and let us hope thy wind helps the good doctor on thy journey back to the pavilion ."

The best WG Grace sledge was on him, though, not from him. Charles Kortright had dismissed him four or five times in a county game - only for the umpires to keep turning down his appeals. Finally, he uprooted two of Grace's three stumps. Grace stalled, as though waiting for a no-ball call or something, before reluctantly walking off with Kortright's words in his ears: " Surely you're not going, doctor? There's still one stump standing."

The Prasad Vs Sohail Incident : Hero to Zero in 3 easy steps
Chasing India's score of 287-8, pakistan got off to a flyer of a start, Amir Sohail and Saeed Anwar went about tearing the Indian bowling attack. Pakistan looked all set to win as they reached 110 odd for the loss of just 1 wicket within the 15 overs.
1. Play a Great Shot: Amir Sohail was completely bent on demolishing the Indian bowling to pieces, charging down the track to the faster bowlers (if u can call Prasad that) in this particular case he came down the ground (a good 4-5 steps, anymore and he would have hit Prasad too) and slashed the bowl over vacant off side area... the ball disappeared into the fence in a flash ... what followed has since been etched in the memories of every cricket fan in the subcontinent.
2. Act Oversmart: Amir Sohail is no Miandad. But he tries to be,and fails miserably. Sohail after hitting the shot pointed his bat the area where the bowl had disappeared and then towards Prasad apparently gesturing where he will send the next one .
Its not everyday that you see a batsman sledging the bowler, and Sohail was about to learn just why.

3. Get what you called for: Sohail attempting to repeat the shot (albeit with his feet stuck to the ground this time) made room and exposed his stumps, and his weakness, and in return lost his wicket and his face.
As the wicket lay uprooted, Prasad returned the favour to Sohail, pointing to the pavilion this time.The comeback was truly remarkable, almost a miracle .... Prasad has bowled thousands of deliveries and taken hundereds of wickets in his career but, it was this one granted him a place in the History of Indian Cricket .. for ever... the ghost of Miandad's last ball six was exorcised, once and for all.

Steve Waugh Vs Curtly Ambrose Episode.
It really does not get any bigger than this, the two legends of cricket came face to face, literally and engrossed in a verbal duel in a test match in Trinidad. All the juicy details were not to be known until Steve Waugh came out with his autobiography.

Ambrose repeatedly stared Waugh down during a searing spell, and Waugh, who sized up the towering Ambrose, said: " What the f*ck are you looking at? "
Ambrose was stunned because, as Waugh says (in his Autobiography), "no one had ever been stupid enough" to speak to him like that.
Ambrose replied, "Don't cuss me, man", before Waugh's response, which had nothing to do with bowling.
"Unfortunately, nothing inventive or witty came to mind, rather another piece of personal abuse: 'Why don't you go and get f*cked.' "
The Windies skipper Richie Richardson had a hard time keeping Ambrose from hurting the Aussie.

McGrath Vs Brandes(the Best one till now….)

In a showdown of best pacers of two countries, Brandes made up for his complete absence of batting skills by some displaying some great sense of humor and presence of mind.
Aussie paceman Glenn McGrath was bowling to Zimbabwe number 11 Eddo Brandes - who was unable to get his bat anywhere near the ball. McGrath, frustrated that Brandes was still at the crease, wandered up during one particular over and inquired: " Why are you so fat?"
Quick as a flash, Brandes replied: "Because every time I make love to your wife, she gives me a biscuit ."
Even the Aussie slip fielders were in hysterics.

Viv Richards v Greg Thomas
This incident took place during a county championship match between Glamorgan and Somerset.
Glamorgan quickie Greg Thomas had beaten Viv Richards' bat a couple of times and informed the legendary West Indian ace: " It's red, round and weighs about five ounces, in case you were wondering."
The very next ball was given the King Viv treament and smashed out of the ground, into a river - at which point Richards piped up: " Greg, you know what it looks like. Now go and find it."

Merv Hughes and Viv Richards:
Merv Hughes usually never short of a word while on the field, rarely keeps quite. During a test match in the West Indies Hughes didn't say a word to Viv, but continued to stare at him after deliveries. " This is my island, my culture. Don't you be staring at me. In my culture we just bowl." Merv didn't reply, but after he dismissed him he announced to the batsman: " In my culture we just say f*ck off. "

Sachin Tendulkar Vs Abdul Qadir

The year was 1989, the little master had recently made his debut in Pakistan.

Sachin not even old enough to get a driving licence Sachin Tendulkar was facing the best bowlers in the business. As the Pakistani crows jeered and mocked Sachin holding out the placards saying "" Dudh Pita Bhachcha ..ghar jaake dhoodh pee", (hey kid, go home and drink milk), Sachin sent the then young leg spinner Mustaq Ahmed hiding for cover (he had hit two sixes in one over. The frustaded mentor of Mustaq Ahmed the legendary Abdul Qadir challenges Sachin saying " Bachchon ko kyon mar rahe ho? Hamein bhi maar dikhao ` (`Why are you hitting kids? Try and hit me.`).
Sachin was silent, since then we all have come to know that he lets his bat do the talking. Abdul Quadir had made a simple request and Sachin obliged, and how. Sachin hit 4 sixes in the over, making the spinner look the kid in the contest. The over read 6, 0, 4, 6 6 6, David had felled Goliath ... and a legend was born.

Ian Healy Vs RANatunga
Ian Healy's made a legendary comment which was picked up by the Channel 9 microphones when Arjuna Ranatunga called for a runner on a particularly hot night during a one dayer in Sydney... " You don't get a runner for being an overweight, unfit, fat c*nt!"

McGrath to Ramnaresh Sarwan:
Sarwan, the West Indies vice-captain, and McGrath went toe-to-toe in an ugly shouting match in Antigua in May 2003, The incident was sparked after Sarwan, on his way to a match-winning second-innings century, reportedly reacted to lurid taunts from McGrath by telling him he should get the answers from his wife, who was recovering from radiation therapy for secondary cancer. The details :

McGrath: "So what does Brian Lara's d*ck taste like?"

Sarwan: "I don't know. Ask your wife. "

McGrath (losing it): "If you ever F*&king mention my wife again, I'll F*cking rip your F*fing throat out."

Mark Waugh Vs Adam Parore
Mark Waugh was standing at second slip, Adam Parore relatively new to cricket came to the crease played & missed the first ball.
Mark Waugh- "Ohh, I remember you from a couple years ago in Australia. You were sh*t then, you're fu*king useless now".
Parore- (Turning around) "Yeah, that's me & when I was there you were going out with that old, ugly sl*t & now I hear you've married her. You dumb c*nt ".

Ravi shastri v/s Mike Whitney:
Its common knowledge that Indian's usually don't resort to sledging, and the Aussies swear by it. In this rare ocassion the tables had turned and it was the Aussies who were at the receiving end.
Shastri hits the ball towards Mike Whitney (the 12th man in the game) and looks for a single, this guy gets the ball in and says
Whitney: "If you leave the crease i'll break your f***ing head"
Shastri didn't bat an eyelid before replying : " If you could bat as well as you can talk you wouldn't be the f***ing 12th man"

Merv Hughes Vs Cronje

Merv Hughes was one of the greatest exponents of the fine "art" of sledging. Once during a tour game in South Africa Hughes was bowling to Hansie Cronje . It was an especially flat wicket and Cronje was hitting Hughes for fours and sixes all over the place.
After the umpteenth boundary, Hughes headed down the pitch, stood near Cronje, let out a fart and said: "Try hitting that for six." It was five minutes before the guffawing stopped and play could resume.

Robin Smith and Merv Hughes
During 1989 Lords Test, Merv Hughes said to Robin Smith after he played and missed: " You can't f*cking bat".
Simth replied, both with the bat and with words, he smashed Hughes to the boundry and said " Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can't f*cking bat and you can't f*cking bowl ."

Team mates Sledging :S
England were playing Pakistan and, at what turned out to be a crucial moment later on, Frank Tyson managed to get an outside edge off a Pakistani batsman after the batsman had been frustrating them on a hot sweaty day. The ball went right through the hands of Raman Subba Rao who was standing in first slip and through his legs. After the over Raman heads over to the bowler and says, "Sorry Frank, I should've closed my legs." Frank Tyson, who didn't find any of this amusing, quipped back, "No, you bastard, your mother should have ."

Ian Healy Vs a Short chubby batsman:
In one of the tour matches in South Africa, Australia played Hansie Cronje's province. Cronje was at the non strikers end, there was a short chubby batsman on strike.
Ian Healy yelled to Warne, " Bowl a Mars Bar half way down...We'll get him stumped"
The Aussies and Cronje were all in hysterics, all this was before a classic reply from the batsman.
The exact words: " Nah, Boonie (David Boon) fielding at short leg will be onto it before I can move."

Miandad Vs Lillee: The 'brats' clash:

Miandad played Lillee to s quare leg and completed an easy run, with a collision taking place in the center. According to Miandad, Lillee had tried to block him in the path. After a verbal exchange, Lillee went ahead and kicked Miandad on his pads. Miandad, started charging towards Lillee with his bat lifted high above the head, as if to hit him. The umpire's intervention prevented what could have turned out to be a real assault had Miandad gone head with his plans. However, the picture of Miandad hurling his bat at Lillee made the whole incident look even worse, and was promptly declared as the most indignified incident in the history of Cricket.
Lillee's version, to this day, had Miandad first hitting him with the bat, and then swearing at him. He maintained that there was no contact from his side throughout the incident.

Note: The author is awsare if the fact that this incident has nothing to do with sledging, but found the temptation of mentioning the episode was too hard to resist.

The Frog Jumping incident, 1992 India Vs Pakistan:

India vs Pakistan matches are always a treat to watch, and if its the World Cup its stakes are even greater. Javed Miandad, the Bad boy of cricket, at the receiving end for once. Miffed by the verbals from Kiran More, he complains " Insaan khel rahe hain janwaar nahin" (Human beings are playing not animals). And after a sharp run out chance, where Miandad closely survives Miandad starts jumping up and down, face distorted imitating Kiran More's appealing. A sight to behold. Pure comedy. Pakistan loses the match but go on to win the cup.
'I did it instinctively', Miandad later told. He added, 'Hey, is this the way you appeal for everything? Don't appeal like that '. You can also watch the video of the incident.

Dropped the Cup?
Perhaps the most famous sledge in a World Cup match took place the epic Super Six clash between Australia

and South Africa (in 2003). South Africa looked on course to a routine victory with Australian captain Steve Waugh at the crease and on 56. At that stage, Waugh clipped the ball in the air straight to South African fielder Herschelle Gibbs. In his haste, Gibbs dropped the ball when attempting to throw it in the air in celebration as he had not fully controlled it. As he passed him, Waugh is said to have asked Gibbs: " How does it feel to have dropped the World Cup?". Waugh carried on to make an unbeaten 120 and Australia posted an unlikely win and won the World Cup a few days later.
Waugh has however denied that quote, instead claiming that he said " looks like you've dropped the match".

Hughes Vs Miandad
The inimitable Merv Hughes has forgotten more about sledging than most people will ever know, so he was more than a little miffed to be on the receiving end in the 1991 Adelaide Test against Pakistan. Hughes and Javed Miandad almost came to blows after the Pakistani batsman dared to call big Merv a " fat bus conductor". But revenge was sweet for Hughes. A few balls later he finally got his man and as Miandad walked past, he could not resist shouting " Tickets, please!"

Dennis Lillee Vs Sunil Gavaskar
Dennis Lillee and Sunil Gavaskar, were involved in a war of words in the 3rd Test, MCG, February 1981. A historic win for India in that Test would definitely not have taken place had Sunil Gavaskar not calmed down. He clashed with Australian

fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who Gavaskar claims abused him after claiming his wicket and the Indian captain asked non-striker Chetan Chauhan to walk off the field, forfeiting the match. Gavaskar was batting on 70 when Lillee appealed for a leg before decision. Gavaskar showed his bat to the umpire, indicating he had 'nicked' the ball before it hit his pads. Angry words were exchanged between the batsman and the bowler, and Lillee even went to the extent of pointing to the batsman the spot where the ball had his pads. The decision went in favour of the bowler and as Gavaskar started his long, dejected walk back to the pavilion, Lillee turned around and abused him. That was it. Gavaskar snapped, and decided to forfeit the match.
Later, Gavaskar was to write in his book 'Idols': "That (the walkout) was the most regrettable incidents of my life. Whatever may be the provocation and whatever the reason, there was no justification for my action and I realize now that I did not behave the way a captain and sportsman should ."

Flintoff Vs Tino Best
Best, never short of a word or two when he is bowling, was done up like a kipper by the England all-rounder as West Indies slumped to defeat in the first Test. Flintoff saw his opponent preparing to face Giles' off-spin and shouted: " Watch the windows, Tino!" The wind-up had the desired effect, causing Best to come charging out of his crease like a man possessed. He took a wild swing at the ball, missed and was promptly stumped by Geraint Jones. Not a broken window in sight. Flintoff could not contain himself and spent the next five minutes giggling like a teenager, as Best sat on the balcony rueing his stupidity.

Viv Richards to Gavaskar:
Gavaskar had decided to relinquish his opening position and come in at no 4 for that test. But, Malcolm Marshall fired out Anshuman Gaekwad and Dilip Vengsarkar for ducks, setting the stage for Gavaskar to walk in at 0/2.And he thought there would be less pressure! Viv Richards says " Man, it don't matter where you come in to bat, the score is still zero."

Steve Waugh and Parthiv Patel

Amidst all the hype surrounding his farewell match, Steve Waugh had to contend with an unexpected dose of his own medicine from a player half his age.
As Waugh fought a grim battle to stave off defeat in the series-deciding fourth Test in Sydney, 19 year-old Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel tried to unsettle the veteran batsman through some banter.
The baby-faced Patel egged on the 38 year-old stalwart to play one of his sweep shots one last time.
The India 'keeper was saying, 'Come on, just one more of the famous slog-sweeps before you finish'
Waugh replied: 'Look, show a bit of respect. You were in nappies when I debuted 18 years ago' .

Rod Marsh and Ian Botham:
When Botham took guard in a Ashes match, Marsh welcomed him to the wicket with the immortal words: " So how's your wife and my kids?"

Trueman and Aussie batsman
In an England v Australia Test during early 1960's Trueman was fielding close to the gate from the pavilion. As a new batsman came out he turned to shut the gate, Trueman said " Don't bother son, you won't be out there long enough."

Daryll Cullinan and Shane Warne.
As Cullinan was on his way to the wicket, Warne told him he had been waiting 2 years for another chance to humiliate him. " Looks like you spent it eating ," Cullinan retorted.

Adam Parore and Daryll Cullinan

Oh my God!! What's happening to Chennai!!?? I am frustrated and upset with the management's rather lack luster attitude. A team which came so close to being the champions last season are negotiating a spot in the bottom 4 with teams like the Royal Challengers and Knight Riders!

Why isn't Mr. Cool aka Dhoni , the master strategist, able to do anything. Have things gone beyond the point of even expecting a victory.... Has Chennai forgotten how to win?? Certainly not!! Then why!!? Why aren't we able to get through. Hayden is available for the entire season and is contributing. Murali is doing what he does best. Raina has been chipping in. Dhoni's presence is reason enough for any team to fear the Superkings. Goni is a proven performer. Then why!!?? What's the reason!??

For me, it's plain and simple....all the teams play with 11 players. Chennai play with 10. Mr. Joginder aka the Lucky Macot aka Dhoni ka Chela, call him what you will, does not bat. He needs at least 12 stumps at the batting end to bowl on the stumps!! Is hardly what you would call an electric fielder!! Then why the heck is he in the playing eleven?? Besides, how many times has Parthiv productively contributed?? Neither Parthiv nor Joginder have the aura of a Superking!

Vidyut showed sparks of his opening abilities last season. Palani Amarnath was one of the better bowlers we had last season. Why aren't they being played??!! At least they play with more commitment. Besides, it'll add a more chennai flavour to the team. Our bowling department is so weak. It certainly wouldn't do any harm to include a good spinner who can bat. Ntini can have such a enthu effect on the team. Why hasn't he been tried? What could be the reason for this stubborn attitude of the Superkings management? With the kind of bowlers we have, even a target of 300 will become undefendable!!! For Christ's sake, use the the 11th player!! Chuck Joginder out!! Give the locals a chance.

Dhoni must listen to the fans. Specially when he knows that they are right. I thought of writing a letter to Mr. Fake. Will post it soon. Cya friends

The Fake IPL Player Revealed (My Opinion)

I'm not sure why I am writing this post. This, in fact, is my first post in almost a year!! Almost began to believe that blogging is about copy pasting interesting stuff & expecting readers to lap it up!!

Guess I had to do a bit of a re-think after reading Mr. Fake's supposedly interesting posts. People, from all over the world seem to be head over heels about this guy. In fact his latest post has invited close to 1320 comments even as I write this post!! Damn, that's a far cry for me!!

A lot of people call this fellow a "Coward", but for me, he is the perennially isolated soul that is forever searching for a Mt Zion to take refuge in and vent all its sorrows into a river that can flow into oblivion.

I just graduated from college & believe me, I had a thousand million complaints against the fools managing my college. But, there was no way we could stand against the management....It was dictatorship to say the least. Mr. Fake has suddenly given a lot of us some very interesting ideas to vent our frustrations....

I'm really not sure whether this fellow is ever going to reveal himself but the detective in me decided to go ahead and do some RnD.

Let me not beat around the bush. Ranadeb Bose!! What do you guys think about this fellow? A few months earlier I remember him complaining about how the Indian management failed to recognize his talent and give him the opportunities he deserved. I tried my best to search for the article that had once featured in Mid-Day. But looks like the article has been lost in the archives. So, I'll have to stick with informal references to his comments.

If you had read the entire article, you could reach the following conclusions :
1. He was pretty well versed with English

2. He had the audacity to take on the management

3. He seemed to be a person who took pride in his talent. Do you call it "A Superiority Complex"?

4. He seemed to have resigned to the fact that his career at the top level was virtually over and had started resorting to psychological means to get a place back in the team.

Taking all these into consideration I have no qualms in saying with conviction that the fake IPL player is Ranadeb Bose. Your comments are most welcome......

My Offer Letter from Infosys was not delivered by Yahoo!

Hey friends,
It's been a long time since I wrote my heart out.

This is the story about how YAHOO! the losers have completely removed the serenity in my life. All their crappe about being the best email service is nonsense.

When I was in the 3rd yr of engg in 2008, Infosys recruited me and told me that the offer letter was due in 6-8 months time. We(my friends) waited patiently till Feb and in the month of Feb, all of us except I got the offer letters. Why did I not get the letter?? Did Infosys think I was incapable, did I not fit into their scheme of things? I was confused....My interview with the HR had been perfect to say the least and yet, here I was, confounded by the fact that everyone was deemed worthy but me!

I had, due to my immense trust(don't know why, though) , given my YAHOO! mailing address.
I kept checking my mail every 2 minutes to see if a mail arrived or not. My friends had received theirs in the evening itself and I kept logging in and logging out till 2am!! Just then, I realized that the last piece of shit that I received on YAHOO! was in the month of NOV 2008! That meant it was 4 months since I received the last bit of real shit on that account! It wasn't inactive, I could still send mails but I wasn't able to receive any!

That's when I realized how my trust on YAHOO! had literally led to a morality crash. YAHOO! is known for the shit it keeps ending....all I ever received on YAHOO! was spam. And just when I had begun to appreciate their filters, this happens.

I, then had to undergo a strenuous process of calling up Infosys who were very very POLITE as usual and took my request for resending the mail to GMAIL (by far the best!)
So, in case you are wondering why your friends have recieved the letters and you haven't, just chill. I have a few tips for you, rather steps to take in order to get your offer letter.

1. Stop appreciating shit and using shit.....YAHOO SUCKS BIG TIME!! I would advise you to start using gmail

2. Contact your placement cell in college and tell them to forward a request to the company asking them to resend the mail to your new address.

3. Call up 180030004747. It's a tollfree number that's surprisingly always available!! :) This actually is the easiest way out. You have to fill them with the required details and the offer letter will be there in you right address in 2 days time. The first 2 steps are just for peace of mind and to let your college know about your status respectively.

4. If you still do not receive the letter, call them up on the appropriate numbers mentioned here . http://www.infosys.com/contact/apac.asp
Mind you, this should be the last resort.

And ya, don't forget step 1!!

Article 49-O : The Right to Not Vote

DID YOU know that there is a provision in the Constitution of India, as per the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1969 Act, in Section 49-O that a person can go to the polling booth, confirm his identity, get his finger marked, and convey to the presiding election officer that he/she doesn’t want to vote for anyone! Yes, such a feature is available, but obviously these seemingly notorious leaders have never disclosed it. It is called "49-O".

49-O: The voter (or elector) deciding not to vote:

If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form-17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as required under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark.

If you think none of the candidates at the ward / constituency are able enough to lead the community, you can always opt not to vote, but if you will use this right of yours you may start a new things in our electoral process, which will further strengthen our democracy.

It is useful in the following way:

In a ward or constituency, if a candidate wins, say by ’x’ votes, and that particular ward has received "49-O" votes more than x, then that polling will be cancelled and will have to be re-polled.

Not only that, but the candidature of the contestants will be removed and they cannot contest the re-polling, since people have already expressed their decision on them. This would bring fear into parties and hence look for genuine candidates for their parties for election. This would change the way of our whole political system. It is seemingly surprising why the election commission has not revealed such a feature to the public.

Please spread the word about this and make our fellow countrymen aware of this right. No political party (or conventional media) would campaign for it. It’s yours and my duty. So, let’s go ahead from today!

Before anything else, I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. More than 150 innocent people have lost their lives and more than 350 injured. Families have been torn apart and the common man stands agitated and insecure. There is a feeling of terror and fear in everyone's minds. Mumbai stands shaken, the average mumbaikar asks himself whether staying on is the right choice. The human who lives the mechanical life of a Mumbaikar questions the integrity of the politicians. What were the politicians doing when the army informed them about this suspicous MV Alpha that carried the terrorists? What steps did the government take after the serial blasts in cities all around the nation? Where were the so called 'Sons of the Soil' who were supposed to be Mumbai's saviours? What will the average maharashtrian have to say to the many Biharis and UP commandoes who put their life on the guilotine so that the city may rest in peace? Is the compensation amount announced by the government sufficient? Is that all the value for the many souls that have attained martyrdom? Questions , questions questions!!! Why, how, when??!!! When can I venture out to the city and proclaim to the world that Mumbai is insulated with unity and togetherness? When can I don the fabric of an independent Indian? WHO is going to answer me?
The vulnerability of the city stands exposed to the terror world due to disgusting divisive politics and fundamentalism based agendas in governance. Will the politician ever have the guts to make a decision that he believes in and put his post at risk for the good of the people. When will they ever make strong statements?? When will they ever do something that shakes the world of terror??!!
Why are we trying to develop relations with a terror torn nation?? More than 50% of the Pakistan is infected with fundamentalistic islamic idealogies. Sooner or later everyone is going to become a fidayeen. Why then are we trying to befriend a nation which is constituted of terrorists ? Why are we speaking about fraternity with a nation which has never stuck to its words? Pakistan sucks big time!! Lets not sign border based agreements and enter into other deals with this nation that'll ease the entry route of every pakistani into India. Stop the bloody trading with them. We don't need it.
Just give us the mumbaikars a safer city to live in. Eradicate corruption that has been and will continue to be the bane of India. Make bold decisions dear politicians. Make decisions that you believe in. Pick a leaf from the books of Indira Gandhi. If you can't, we'll be happy to accept your resignation. We are your bosses(the common man). You are our servants. You are our watchdogs. That's what we pay you for.
I want to live peacefully. I rather die a quick death than lead a troubled life filled with terror, fear and insecurity. Is anyone listening?!

Why I love the i-League more than the Barclays EPL!

Well....I know I am not being realistic. But , who is??!!
Patronization either is a product of affinity though origin or participation. The EPL as the name indicates, is ENGLISH!!! Doesn't even have an Indian in the league(ofcourse, discounting guys like M. Chopra who have parental origins) So there is no question of origin affinity or patriotic affinity either. Obviously none of us have ever been involved with any of the EPL team's activities.... So people going bonkers over english clubs, sometimes baffles me because I just don't find this patronization "REALISTIC" ! You may argue about the entertainment factor, but come to think of it. If all Indians were to be as crazy about the i-League as the BArclays EPL, the money into the sport would increase. This would result in better infrastructure for the players and elevate them to world standards! This would in turn motivate the governing bodies to create if not astro turfs, at least quality pitches. This would most certainly turn the eyes of the world to India. In a matter of time, India would be a Global phenomenon in football!!! The Bottom line - This is possible only if you and I want to make it happen!!
Man U or Arsenal don't and SHOULD NOT give me any sort of pride. But a Mumbai FC defeating a Mohun Bagan does make me swell with pride. Mumbai FC Rocks!! For me its better than any of the EPL teams. Just like ever since 1983, India has been the best in cricket for me even if it never won a world cup or kept repeatedly getting defeated by Aus(I think you would agree to). Someday, a day which isn't very far off, the i-League is going to be looked up to. It may not be a realistic dream now, but Dreams are what I call the designing stages of the Project called Life!!

The world and the USA in particular is seeing an economic cyclone. The big names in the industry have come crashing down. Inflation sees a rise one day and a dip the next day. Oil prices seem too confused. The global economy on the whole is in some kind of a makeover period. Investors have been given a reality check and the harsh truth about the real value of money has been forcibly injected into the common man's mind.
One news that most of us have been seeing regularly is about the Lehman Brothers and Merill Lynch crisis. I bet, most of you still haven't understood what the fuss is all about. So, we at Quiz Quotient thought it would be a good idea to provide our readers with answers to the fundamental questions that we thought you may be asking yourselves.

Q1. What has happened to Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch?

Answer : Lehman Brothers and Merill Lynch, two of the world's largest financial institutions, booked big losses on account of their exposures in some 'highly risky' assets. Lehman Brothers posted a loss of $3.9 billion (Rs 17,500 crore) in the quarter ending June 2008. This created panic among investors leading to fall of Lehman's stock price into rubble, leading to filing of bankruptc On the same note Merrill Lynch posted a second quarter loss of $4.65 billion. Following this, the shares of the two companies came under pressure.

Q2. Is there any difference between the two?

The difference between the two is in their endings: while Lehman could not find a saviour for itself and hence had to file for bankruptcy, Merrill Lynch managed to draw Bank of America to its rescue.

Q3. What led to the huge losses?

Answer: Lehman Brothers was counting big on the real estate boom and hence had overexposed its investments in the real estate sector As property prices went blist, so did the optimism of Lehman prospect on those investments.

Q4. What led to the fall in real estate prices?

Answer: The fall in real estate prices was triggered by a sub-prime crisis.

Q5. And just what is that?

Answer: Sub-prime, refers to a loan given to a borrower who does not qualify for a regular home loan, because of a poor credit record, low income and no job security In the current context, in the US, banks gave out many such loans in their zeal to keep ahead of their peers in the banking sector The subsequent defaults coupled with high unemployment resulted in major loss of income across the economy The sub-prime issue erupted almost a year ago.

Q7. What are the lessons from this crisis?

Answer: The sub-prime crisis is a result of individual incentives and lack of accountability. As risk is spreading globally, its ripple effect might surface in the unlikeliest of places. Credit history of borrowers is essential. There has to be greater check on background of borrowers and their repayment ability Rating agencies are typically paid by issuers and only for initial rating. Therefore, true assessment should be carried out through a robust and appropriate re-rating system.

Q8. Is my money at risk?

Answer: If you are talking about your investments in the stock markets, the answer is 'yes' in the short term. In the long term, if the companies you've invested in are fundamentally strong, there is no reason to panic. The Great Moon Landing Hoax

Somebody is certainly hoaxing us here, the question is whether it is NASA or the people that claim man never went to the moon...

On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong set his boot on the surface of the lunar landscape. In that act he completed one of mankind's greatest achievements: Landing a man on the moon.

Or did he? Some skeptics have suggested that those trips the Apollo spacecraft made to our nearest celestial neighbor may never have happened. According to these skeptics it was all an elaborate deception designed to make the world believe that the United States had beat the USSR to the moon after NASA figured out that they didn't have the technology to do it for real.

Bill Kaysing, author of We Never Went to the Moon, is perhaps the most well-known skeptic of the manned moon landings. Kaysing was also a heavy contributor to a television special entitled Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon? The program, hosted by Mitch Pileggi, first appeared on the Fox network in 2001 and has been repeated several times since then.

The program raised a number of points that on first glance seem to make NASA's moon landing suspicious. On close scientific examination, however, most of these claims seem to fade like moonshine in the morning sun.

No Stars in Sky

Perhaps the first point raised, or at least the one most memorable, is the stars. Or more precisely, the lack of them. People who are skeptical of the moon landing point out that even though the sky in all the moon pictures is black, as it should be if there is no atmosphere on the moon (and there isn't), no stars can be seen. This is taken as an indication that the pictures were faked and NASA forgot to paint stars on the studio backdrop.

The truth is that if you were to see stars in the sky in those moon pictures it would be a definite indication that they were faked. Why? Well, all the landings were done during daylight hours on the moon. That means that even though the sky was black, the sun was up. The lunar surface is mostly a light gray and reflects light extremely well. The light levels during the landings were probably similar to those in a western desert in the morning, bright enough to warrant sunglasses, or in the case of the astronauts, sunvisors on their spacesuits.

For this reason the NASA cameras had to be stopped down (this mean a minimal amount of light was allowed to enter the camera) and the exposure times shortened to allow only enough light onto the film to properly illuminate the surface. The stars were much too faint to show up on these pictures. Expecting them to show up would be similar to going out into that western desert at midmorning, setting the camera properly to take pictures under those conditions, coming back after nightfall to take pictures of the stars without readjusting the exposure on the camera and then expecting to get something. Stars are hard enough to photograph under any conditions, let alone with an exposure setting appropriate for daylight.

Ironically, many of the conceptual drawings of the moon landing done by NASA artists at the time show stars appearing in the lunar sky. It seems unlikely NASA would have forgotten to paint them on the backdrop if they were trying to fake it.

Even modern NASA pictures of the space shuttle or earth from orbit do not usually show stars. This is for the same reason: When in direct sunlight the earth and and shuttle are very bright and the cameras must be stopped down too low to capture starlight.

Shadows Too Light

Moonlanding skeptics point out that if the photographs the astronauts supposedly took on the moon were actually taken there, the shadows should be absolutely black. The sun is the only source of light and there is no atmosphere to scatter the light around. In the images, though, the shadows are often well lit. Skeptics use the argument that this was because the shots were filmed in a studio that had an atmosphere.

There is a basic misconception with this thinking, however. In a single light situation, shadows are filled in not just from the light rays being scattered by air. The light in the shadows also comes from being bounced off other objects. You can see this effect from a simple home experiment. Get two pieces of construction paper, one black and one white, then go into a dark room and light a single lamp. Place an object in front of you to create a shadowed area. Now bring the black construction paper near the shadow on a 45-degree angle partly facing the light, partly facing the shadow. Because the black paper is absorbing the light, the shadow does not change. Now slide the white construction paper in front of the black. The shadow should grow lighter from the light reflecting off the white paper.

The same effect is present on the moon. The light bounces off the surface of the moon as well as the astronauts spacesuits and other equipment around the lander. Because the moon's surface is a light gray, and very reflective, the shadows can be lit very brightly.

Non-Parallel Shadows

Another argument often used to disprove the authenticity of the Apollo photographs involves the direction of the shadows. According to skeptics, the shadows in the NASA pictures appear to diverge. If the sun is the single bright light in the pictures, then the shadows should be parallel. This, according to NASA's critics, shows that the single light source was much closer to the astronauts than the sun, or there were multiple lights involved.

Clearly there were no multiple lights involved as there are no multiple shadows in the pictures. Whether the shadows appear to diverge, instead of running parallel is dependent on the camera lens used in taking the photographs. A slightly wide-angle camera, as was used on the moonwalk, can make parallel lines appear to diverge. Even so, some photographs (like the one to the right of Alan Shepard planting the flag) do not show any divergence at all, but the parallel shadows converge on the photo's vanishing point, just like they should.

The Waving Flag

While the American flag was being put up on the moon it appears to wave. Skeptics argue that this was caused by a breeze on the set where the hoax was filmed because a flag cannot wave in a vacuum. This is wrong thinking, however. The flag waves because the astronauts were wiggling the flagpole back and forth trying to get it to stick in the lunar soil. Given that kind of motion, any cloth would wave whether it is in a vacuum or not.

Later on, still pictures show the flag apparently waving even after the astronauts have moved away from it. A glance at the moving video reveals that the flag is not waving. It simply had a ripple in it from not being fully extended across its length as it hung from its top supporting pole much like a gathered curtain. This was done accidentally on Apollo 11, but the astronauts loved this effect so much that they did it on every subsequent moonlanding.

The Radiation Belt

The van Allen belts are a region in space where Earth's magnetic field has trapped particles from the solar wind. Skeptics of the moon landing argue that an astronaut would get a lethal dose of radiation if he were to pass through the belts on the way to the moon.

While continued exposure to the concentration of radiation found in the belts might well be fatal, the space capsule the astronauts were traveling in was going very fast and passed through the belts in a few hours. The metal hull of the capsule also gave the astronauts some protection from the radiation as well. While there was a certain risk in passing through the belts, as there is in every venture into space, the astronauts exposure from the van Allen belts was minimal: about 2 rem which is the equivalent of a 100 chest x-rays.

Moon Dust and Feathers

There are any number of points skeptics of the moon landing can bring up that don't "look right" to them, but all have simple scientific explanations when examined closely. Let's try doing the opposite: Look at some things seen on the video or in the pictures that would indicate that these things really happened on the moon.

Phil Plait of the Bad Astronomy site points outs that video footage taken of some of the moon rovers shows dust being thrown up by the wheels as it rolls across the lunar surface. The dust rises and falls in nearly a perfect parabolic arc. This can only happen in a vacuum. Dust thrown up in earth's atmosphere would float and swirl around as it was carried by eddies in the air. Wherever the rover was at the time the video was taken, it was certainly in a location that had no air. Skeptics might argue that NASA took the trouble to build a sealed set and pump the air out, but this would be a tremendously difficult undertaking. It would also contradict evidence of the "waving" flag, as described above.

Astronaut Dave Scott also did a quick physics lesson in front of the video camera during Apollo 15 that showed he was on the moon. He dropped a hammer and a feather and watched them fall to the ground. On Earth the feather's high wind resistance and low weight would have caused it to slowly drift slowly down. On the moon, however, the feather fell just as quickly as the hammer. Both dropped to the ground at exactly the same rate one would expect to see if the objects were being pulled to the ground by the moon's one-sixth Earth gravity.

The Myth about The Lost Continent of Atlantis

The idea of a lost, but highly advanced civilization has captured the interest of people for centuries. Perhaps the most compelling of these tales is the story of Atlantis. The story appears again and again in books, television shows and movies. Where did the story originate and is any of it true?

Plato's Atlantis

The story of the lost continent of Atlantis starts in 355 B.C. with the Greek philosopher Plato. Plato had planned to write a trilogy of books discussing the nature of man, the creation of the world, and the story of Atlantis, as well as other subjects. Only the first book was ever completed. The second book was abandoned part way through, and the final book was never even started.

Plato used dialogues to express his ideas. In this type of writing, the author's thoughts are explored in a series of arguments and debates between various characters in the story. Plato often used real people in his dialogues, such as his teacher, Socrates, but the words he gave them were his own.

In Plato's book, Timaeus, a character named Kritias tells an account of Atlantis that has been in his family for generations. According to the character, the story was originally told to his ancestor, Solon, by a priest during Solon's visit to Egypt.

There had been a powerful empire located to the west of the "Pillars of Hercules" (what we now call the Straight of Gibraltar) on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. The nation there had been established by Poseidon, the God of the Sea. Poseidon fathered five sets of twins on the island. The firstborn, Atlas, had the continent and the surrounding ocean named for him. Poseidon divided the land into ten sections, each to be ruled by a son, or his heirs.

The capital city of Atlantis was a marvel of architecture and engineering. The city was composed of a series of concentric walls and canals. At the very center was a hill, and on top of the hill a temple to Poseidon. Inside was a gold statue of the God of the Sea showing him driving six winged horses.

About 9000 years before the time of Plato, after the people of Atlantis became corrupt and greedy, the gods decided to destroy them. A violent earthquake shook the land, giant waves rolled over the shores, and the island sank into the sea, never to be seen again.

So, is the story of Atlantis just a fable used by Plato to make a point? Or is there some reason to think he was referring to a real place? Well, at numerous points in the dialogues, Plato's characters refer to the story of Atlantis as "genuine history" and it being within "the realm of fact." Plato also seems to put into the story a lot of detail about Atlantis that would be unnecessary if he had intended to use it only as a literary device.

On the other hand according to the writings of the historian Strabo, Plato's student Aristotle remarked that Atlantis was simply created by Plato to illustrate a point. Unfortunately, Aristotle's writings on this subject, which might have cleared the mystery up, have been lost eons ago.

Location, Location, Location

If we make the assumption that Atlantis was a real place, it seems logical that it could be found west of the Straight of Gibraltar near the Azores Islands. In 1882 a man named Ignatius Donnelly published a book titled Atlantis, the Antediluvian World. Donnelly, an American politician, had come to the belief that Plato's story represented actual historical fact. He located Atlantis in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, suggesting the Azores Islands represented what remained of the highest mountain peaks. Donnelly said he had studied zoology and geology and had come to the conclusion that civilization itself had begun with the Atlantians and had spread out throughout the world as the Atlantians established colonies in places like ancient Egypt and Peru. Donnelly's book became a world-wide best seller, but researchers could not take Donnelly's theories seriously as he offered no proof for his ideas.

As time when on it became obvious that Donnelly's theories were faulty. Modern scientific surveys of the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean shows it is covered with a blanket of sediment that must have taken millions of years to accumulate. There is no sign of a sunken island continent.

Are there any other candidates for the location of Atlantis? People have made cases for places as diverse as Switzerland, in the middle of Europe, and New Zealand, in the Pacific Ocean. The explorer, Percy Fawcett, thought that it might be located in Brazil. One of the most convincing arguments, though, came from K.T. Frost, a professor of history at the Queen's University in Belfast. Later, Spyridon Marinatos, an archaeologist, and A.G. Galanopoulos, a seismologist, added evidence to Frost's ideas.

The Minoan Connection

Frost suggested that instead of being west of the Pillars of Hercules, Atlantis was east. He also thought that the catastrophic end of the island had come not 9000 years before Plato's time, but only 900. If this was true, the land of Atlantis might already be a well-known place even in Plato's time: the island of Crete.

Are Pyramids a Clue?

Lewis Spence, a Scottish writer, published several books on Atlantis in the early 20th century. He was fascinated by the pyramids constructed by ancient races in different parts of the globe. Spence wondered if the creation of pyramids in diverse areas such as South America and Egypt indicated that these places had all been colonies of the Atlantis and if the Atlantians were the original pyramid makers. While the idea is interesting, most historians today believe the trend toward building pyramids occurred independently in different locations.

Crete is now a part of modern Greece and lies just south of Athens across part of the Mediterranean Sea. Before 1500 B.C. it was the seat of the Minoan Empire. The Minoans dominated the eastern Mediterranean with a powerful navy and probably extracted tribute from other surrounding nations. Archaeological excavations have shown that Minoan Crete was probably one of the most sophisticated cultures of its time. It had splendid architecture and art. A code of laws gave women equal legal status to men. Agriculture was highly developed and an extensive irrigation system existed.

Then, seemingly in a blink of an eye, the Minoan Civilization disappeared. Geological studies have shown that on an island we now know as Santorinas, located just ten miles to the north of Crete, a disaster occurred that was very capable of toppling the Minoan state.

Santorinas today is a lush Mediterranean paradise consisting of several islands in a ring shape. Twenty-five hundred years ago, though, it was a single large island with a volcano in the center. The volcano blew itself apart in a massive explosion around 1500 B.C.

To understand the effect of such an explosion, scientists have compared it with the most powerful volcanic explosion in historic times. This occurred on the Island of Krakatoa in 1883. There a giant wave, or tsunami, 120 feet high raced across the sea and hit neighboring islands, killing 36,000 people. Ash thrown up into the air blackened the skies for three days. The sound of the explosion was heard as far away as 3,000 miles.

The explosion at Santorinas was four times as powerful as Krakatoa.

The tsunami that hit Crete must have traveled inland for over half a mile, destroying any coastal towns or cities. The great Minoan fleet of ships were all sunk in a few seconds. Overnight the powerful Minoan Empire was crushed and Crete changed to a political backwater. One can hardly imagine a catastrophe more like Plato's description of Atlantis' fate than the destruction of Crete.

Many of the details of the Atlantis story fit with what is now known about Crete. Women had a relatively high political status, both cultures were peaceful, and both enjoyed the unusual sport of ritualistic bullfighting (where an unarmed man wrestled and jumped over a bull).

If the fall of the Minoans is the story of Atlantis, how did Plato get the location and time wrong? Galanopoulos suggested there was a mistake during translation of some of the figures from Egyptian to Greek and an extra zero added. This would mean 900 years ago became 9000, and the distance from Egypt to "Atlantis" went from 250 miles to 2,500. If this is true, Plato (knowing the layout of the Mediterranean Sea) would have been forced to assume the location of the island continent to be squarely in the Atlantic Ocean.

Not everyone accepts the Minoan Crete theory of the story of Atlantis, but until a convincing case can be made for some other place, it, perhaps, remains science's best guess.

Hail Akhil!!!!! Even as I write this piece, Akhil would be quitely practising with zeal and passion for that elusive Gold.
I must confess that before the Olympics began, I didn't have a clue to who this guy was. For me, our medal hopes were pinned on the Paes-Bhupathi duo and Rathore. Both disappointed the nation though Bindra more than made up for their loses.
Akhil Kumar from Haryana, the son of a police constable is a true success story. i sincerely hopes he goes the distance and earns India its second individual gold. But even if he doesn't, I really wouldn't worry much. Akhil has had a terrible, grueling and
a rather painful past 2 years. He mentioned in one of his interviews that had it not been for his coaches, he would have been working in a railway station. A terrible thing to say for an Indian sportsperson who has won Golds in several other International tournaments for India.
His bout against Vodopyanov and the Ukrainian in the round of 32 were inspiring to say the least. rarely have I seen a pugilist of his caliber and style. While almost all pugilists have a defensive stance, Akhil bravely exposes his face as a bait to lure his opponent. The aggression he displays is impeccable. Truly, made me feel proud to be an Indian.
For all the hard work he has put in, I know that he is going to settle for nothing less than a GOLD.

When India Struck Gold after 20 years!!!

Abhinav....First of all, my hearty congratulations to you.When the news of India's Gold reached my ears, I was in my classroom listening to a boring lecture. The moment the news reached me, I and my friends jumped with elation and joy disregarding even the presence of a teacher. It was possibly one of those moments when I really felt proud to be an Indian. I always am but that moment was extra special. Specially, when you were on that podium and the whole world stood looking up to the Indian flag being raised above the rest and with the National Anthem in the Background, tears rolled down as the ignominy of a 108 years ended and the dream of a billion indians was realised. 3 cheers to you...!!!Jai Hind!!!

The Switch's Riddle

Hey Friends....I am off to a tour of South India. Will be back only after a week or two. So, just to keep you busy, I have listed possibly two very logical riddles. Give them a try. The answer may appear anytime in these 2 weeks. Keep Visiting!!!
Here's the first one

In the basement there are 3 light switches in the off position. Each switch controls 1 of 3 light bulbs on the floor above. You may move any of the switches, but you may only go up stairs one time. How can you determine which switch controls each light?

The Answer:
Turn any one switch to the "on" position for 5 minutes, then turn that switch "off". Quickly turn any other switch to the "on" position and run up stairs. Feel the two lights that are "off". One of them will be "hot" because is was "on" for 5 minutes. Obviously the "hot" bulb is controlled by the first switch you turned "on". The light that is currently "on" is controlled by the switch you last turn "on". The "cold" bulb that is "off" is controlled by the only switch left. When solving problems we often need to use all our senses.

Here is probably another simpler riddle to think about....

You stand before 2 men that stand before 2 doors. Behind one door is your freedom, behind the other your death. One man tells nothing but the truth, one man tells nothing but a lie. You cannot tell the men or the doors apart. You are allowed to ask one man one question only.

You must now decide which door to open. How do you decide which one?

THE ANSWER:
Ask either one "what would the other man say if I asked how to get off the bridge?"

My Experience at the Infosys Interview

INFOSYS!!!
Perhaps the first thing that comes to ones mind when he hears that name is Narayanmurthy. But after my interview with Infosys, that'll probably not be the case with me. With due respect to Mr. Narayanmurthy, Infosys no longer is epitomised by him but by professionalism and immaculate organisation.
My first impression of Infy was, however, of a software firm that was running out of engineers and so desperately wanted employees that it recruited almost everyone who could speak english and boot a PC!!!
But all that changed after 27th of June,08-the day of my first interview.
To start with, I am an aspiring IT professional in the 3rd of my 4yr BE degree. Companies were expected to come for campus placements at the end of the 3rd year. The eligibility criteria for Infosys was 60% in the 10th and 12th stds and 55% aggregate till the 5th semester.
I was well above these criteria and was gearing up for the interview to be held on the 27th of June.
We were called at 8 in the morning for a pre-placement talk(PPT) at the college audi. Indian Standard Time is atleast 1-2 hrs ahead of scheduled time, but Infosys redifined that slightly. The pre-placement talk began exactly at 8:20. The delay was due to technical glitches with the college speakers.
The PPT was as impressive as it could possibly get. The images of the campus looked like paradise. The HR guy who made the presentation was a very good and dynamic speaker and managed to get our undivided attention for the next 1hour. Almost all of us had made up our mind to take up Infy.
With that motivation, we proceeded to the next phase of the process-THE APTITUDE TEST.
The Aptitude test consisted of 2 sections-Logical and Quantitative worth 30 questions and a verbal section with about 40 questions.
The invigilators in my opinion were outsourced by Infy. But they conducted themselves in a very professional manner which was certainly not the case some other companies.
The results of the Aptitude test were released in an hour at about 1pm. Out of the 160 who appeared, 64 managed to make it through to the next round.
The next phase was an HR interview. This began at around 2pm. Infosys showed how much it cared for its potential employees and how much it was ready to invest for them by getting a team of close to 12 HR pros for just 1 interview!!! There was this other software company which I don't wish to name that had 1 aptitude test followed by 2 interviews and they had brought only 3 guys despite the fact that they were based in the same city!! This showed how much more professional and ahead of time Infosys were.
The interview process was superb!! 6 interviews were conducted simultaneously at 6 different offices in the same building.

The HR guys were at their courteous best. Even the most shy students were made to feel comfortable and the best was brought out of them. If ever you want to see politeness and courtesy in corporate porofessionals, then you must visit the HR at Infy. My interview was perfect. We discussed everything from quiz books to newspapers, from cricket to football. We spent almost 5 mins discussing about the previous day's Euro 2008 semi-final. We discussed how unluck Turkey had been and whether Spain was the best or Germany.
They just expect you to be yourself and speak with confidence, attitude
and assertivenss. No need to be excessively over smart. Chances are, that may spoil your chances.
The Bottomline is "Be Yourself!!". Infosys Rocks!! I'll keep you updated on my experiences with Infy. But I have another year before I start my professional career with Infy. How Kapil made a journalist literally eat his words!!!

Kapil Dev's Devils literally made one of the most renowned cricket journalists eat his words after their 1983 triumph.

India had arrived for the 1983 World Cup with two insignificant victories against minnows East Africa in the previous two editions in 1975 and '79, enough ground for the cricketing powers around the world not to take India seriously.

Legendary cricket historian David Edward Frith, the founder-editor of Wisden Cricket Monthly, in a rather blunt analysis said teams like India should not be allowed to compete in a prestigious event like the World Cup.

The English writer, however declared that if India did lift the World Cup, he would eat his words. Frith, would not have dreamt of what was coming. Little did he know that his words would fire an inexperienced team to blaze away to glory.

Frith ate his words alright. The September edition of Wisden magazine that year carried a photograph of the reverred cricket writer with his own article clenched between his teeth. The caption read 'India made me eat my words'. He had actually swallowed down the article with wine.

P.R. Mansingh, the manager of the team, did his part to remind Frith of what he had said.

"It was a very nasty piece he (David) wrote about the Indian team in the June issue of his magazine. The piece was a curtain raiser and it said that the Indian team had no standard and such teams should not be playing in the World Cup. It devalues the tournament," Mansingh was quoted as telling the media.

"Back home after winning the World Cup I wrote to him: 'Now what do you have to say, Mr David?'"

"I was surprised when I opened the September issue of Wisden. It carried my letter and a photograph of David with a piece of paper in his mouth with the caption: 'India made me eat my words'.''

Format Two groups of four, as in 1979; this time, though, each team played the others in its group twice, not once, to determine the four semi-finalists. As a ploy to reduce the chance of elimination by the weather, it was a good one, even if June wasn't wet and only three of the 27 games went into a reserve day anyway. For the first time, non-Test grounds were used.

Innovations Umpires were told to apply a stricter interpretation of wides and bouncers. The result? More than twice as many wides per match as in 1979 (9.59 to 4.64). A fielding circle (actually an oval) was introduced, 30 yards away from the stumps. Four fieldsmen needed to be inside it at all times.

Early running England dominated Group A, beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka twice each, and New Zealand once. They were followed into the semis by Pakistan, who squeezed through by scoring 0.08 more runs per over than the Kiwis. In Group B, West Indies and India disposed of a disappointing Australian side and newcomers Zimbabwe. The performance of the round came from Winston Davis of West Indies, who demolished the Aussies at Headingley with a Cup-record 7 for 51.

The semis India's dark horses had been creeping up on the rails all tournament, and now they cantered unfussily past a below-par England. Yashpal Sharma and Sandeep Patil made light of a pitch which had undermined England's batsmen, and hit crashing fifties in a six-wicket win. West Indies strutted on, brushing aside Pakistan by eight wickets with more than 11 overs to go. They were helped by a display of Test-match patience from Pakistan's opener, Mohsin Khan, who scratched his way to an apologetic 70 off 176 balls. A lone boundary punctuated his 43 singles, and his team-mates succumbed to attempts to up the tempo at the other end.

The final In advance it looked like an anticlimax. It would surely be another big day for West Indies cricket, and no more than a big day out for the Indians. When India were strangled for 183, and Richards led West Indies to 50 for 1 in reply, Caribbean celebrations began. But then Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath - who finished their careers with a combined total of 103 wickets from 108 Tests - wobbled the ball around, and somehow took three wickets each to dismiss a disbelieving West Indies for 140. Upsets don't come much bigger.

Last hurrah It was an unhappy farewell for Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson and Rodney Marsh. Finalists in 1975, but also-rans in '83, they retired from international cricket a few months later. New Zealand's batting bedrock, Glenn Turner, played his last game for his country, and Bob Willis's creaking limbs didn't hold out much longer. It was Clive Lloyd's final World Cup too - there may never be a better chance to win three tournaments in a row.

First hurrah NZ's Martin Crowe, aged 20, announced himself on the World Cup scene with 97 in the tournament opener against England. There was a limited-overs debut for Abdul Qadir, in which he bamboozled NZ to the tune of 4 for 21, only to improve with 5 for 44 against Sri Lanka. For once he received a pasting from England (0 for 104 in two games).

Not to be forgotten In their first-ever Cup game Zimbabwe beat Australia by 13 runs, but even this looked commonplace after some chaos in Kent. Coming in to bat for India against Zimbabwe at a disastrous 17 for 5, Kapil Dev turned the tranquillity of Tunbridge Wells on its head by blasting an undefeated 175 out of 266 for 8, with 16 fours and six sixes. He put on a Cup-record 126 for the ninth wicket with Syed Kirmani, whose 24 not out was India's next-best score. Oh, and India won by 31 runs. Finally there was the mauling Martin Snedden took in New Zealand's opening match against England. With Allan Lamb in belligerent mood, his figures were an x-rated 12-1-105-2.

How India Conquered the World-A Story Untold

Indian team was quoted 66:1 before the competition started.. few Zimbabwe hiccups & some Australia demolition. loads of upsets including group win over windies & semi-final victory over England. and zoooom ~ Team India into cricket world cup finals.

25th June 1983. Not even 20% of India was aware of this event taking place, as Lords in England got jam-packed for the final showdown. A total of 232,081 fans strolled in, nearly equaling the combined total of past two finals (160,000 for 1975 & 132,000 for 1979).

Winston Davis had broken the record by taking 7 wickets in an ODI for the first time, 13 days before against Aussies, yet Captain Clive Lloyd dropped him for experienced Joel Garner. Won the toss, and opted for fielding. Idea was - Blow the Indian batting.

Most famous (underperforming) pin-up boy of Indian cricket at that time was Sunil Gawaskar. Being an experienced opener, he also was capable to doing miracle right at the top. he didn't. caught by keeper Dujon off Andy Roberts. Fireworks came from Krish Srikanth - pulling, driving, lofting & late cutting = 38 off 57, including a six. Srikanth had found a good partner in Mohinder Amarnath, who was playing sheet-anchor role to perfection. 80 beamers he survived, to compile 26 runs.. most importantly - India were 90 for 2.

Then came series of sweep shots, and flow of wickets. Yashpal Sharma was caught at mid-wicket (rather luckily by inexperienced Gus Logie), right before Amarnath & Srikanth has departed. Kapil Dev, Kirti Azad & all rounder Roger Binny - all looked comfortable, but unhungry. Only Sandeep Patil & his sweep shots were tickling the scoreboard. Late resilience came from Madan Lal, Keeper Kirmani (14 off 43) & Bilvinder Singh Sandhu - a typical number 11, but also a true punjabi.. see the notes.

India 183 all out, but more importantly - absorbed 54.4 overs in all.

Banana Swing from captain Kapil Dev started second session of 1983 world cup finals. Sandhu took new ball from other end, and foxed Gorden Greenidge with an inswinger. ball hit windies opener on the fingers, and crashed onto stumps. Larry Gomes, Desmond Haynes were follwed by Vivian Richards - who wanted to finish the match early. 33 off 28 balls he made, but Madan Lal was rolling arm over in a hurry. His 3 wickets stumbled World Champion caribbean cricket team to 66 for 4.

Clive Lloyd made it 66 for 5 - with his bad shot, going over covers finding Kapil Dev. Mohinder Amarnath was next. coming in jogging, hiding the ball, hitting the seam & extracting extra bounce. Windies Keeper Jeoffery Dujon was holding the fort, but got bowled. Malcom Marshal nicked one - dropped short of first slip. he again nicked the second, and this time the ball carried to Gawaskar.

Rest my fellow cricket fan, is history. India won the 1983 world cup.

The History:
It all started way back in the year 1999-2000. I was quietly sitting in a corner of my room. I still hadn't recovered from what had happened in school a day back. Selections for an Iner-school quiz had started a week back. The selections had no definitive process attached to them. It was just a simple case of "The Teacher's Favourite" goes through.
The teams were selected purely on the basis of reputation and popularity and not knowledge, performance or skill. My dreams of representing the school had just been shattered, since I was neither popular nor a teacher's favourite.

I sat in the corner and decided that it was time to "STOP WAITING AND START DOING".
In a matter of 5 years, I came out with my first book- Quiz Quotient. That's when things took a drastic turn. 5 years of dormancy were now making the transition to professional quizzing. And NO, I wasn't participating in quizzes. Instead, I had started Mastering Quizzes. I had become a QUIZ MASTER!!! That probably is the one tag that makes me swell with pride even today. And today(2008), I can proudly say that I have organized about 10-15 quizzes at a grass root level and 5 quizzes at a professional level(see PORTFOLIO).

6174 is known as Kaprekar's constant or Kaprekar's operation after the Indian Mathematician D.R.Kaprekar. This number is notable for the following property:

Take any four-digit number with at least two digits different. (Leading zeros are allowed.)
Arrange the digits in ascending and then in descending order to get two four-digit numbers, adding leading zeros if necessary.
Subtract the smaller number from the bigger number.
Go back to step 2.

The above operation will always reach 6174 in at most 7 steps and it stops there. Once 6174 is reached, the process will keep yielding 7641 – 1467 = 6174. For example, choose 5342:

5432 – 2345 = 3087

8730 – 0378 = 8352

8532 – 2358 = 6174

The only four-digit numbers for which this function does not work are numbers such as 1111, which give the answer 0 after a single iteration. All other four-digits numbers work if leading zeros are used to keep the number of digits at 4

Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world when measured from base to summit, since its base is located on the seafloor some 20,000 feet (6,000 m) beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, bringing its total height to well over 33,000 ft (10,000 m). In the Hawaiian Language, mauna kea means "white mountain", a reference to its summit being regularly snow-capped during the Northern Hemisphere winter.

The success of Q2 was rewarded with another show at CRITeria-08 in Fr. CRIT. This too was a runaway hit.

CRITeria is Fr. Conceicao Rodrigues Institute of Technology's annual techno-cultural festival.

Quiz Quotient Productions was given the responsibility of organizing the Quiz Show for the festival in the year 2007. Titled 'Q2', the quiz was a grand success with the students.
